Monsters in Prospect Park

Get ready for an out-of-this-world experience.

On June 20, the bands ETHEL and Gutbucket will perform ETHEL’s new score to the Mexican sci-fi classic “La Nave de los Monstruos” ("The Monsters’ Ship") in a free Music & Movies event, June 20 as part of Celebrate Brooklyn! at Propsect Park.

In the tradition of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” audience members will sing and dance and shout along with characters in the film. In fact, it's encouraged.

Every summer, the Music & Movies series at Celebrate Brooklyn! combines live music with a selection of films shown on a giant 50-foot by 21-foot screen, New York’s largest outdoor film screen. This time, with contributions from choreographer and BRIClab Creative Advisor Annie-B Parson, ETHEL, a musically omnivorous band of four Juilliard-trained composer-musicians, will transform “La Nave de los Monstruos” into an especially fun and memorable live performance event.

In the film, the last male on Venus has died and the planet’s regent sends Gamma and Beta, two gorgeous aliens, and their robot, Tor, on a quest to find men on other planets. In their travels through space, they are able to capture several specimens, all of whom are monsters. When their spaceship breaks down, the aliens and their prisoners have to perform an emergency landing in Chihuahua where they meet Laureano and his brother Chuy.

Laureano expresses love to the beautiful Venutians, but only Gamma comprehends the friendly earthling’s meaning. Beta decides to conquer the Earth, using the robot and the monsters as her minions. Laureano must save the planet while taking time out to woo Gamma.

Prior to the concert/screening at the Prospect Park Bandshell (Prospect Park West at Ninth Street), Gutbucket, a decade-old New York quartet that destroys the walls between art-rock, “avant-squonk” and “mathed-out prog,” will also perform material from their new album, “A Modest Proposal,” in an opening set at 7:30 p.m.
