New market for Downtown Brooklyn opening Saturday

This is not your average container store.

Vendors return to the old site of the Albee Square Mall this month, when the long-awaited Dekalb Market, a temporary shopping center constructed from shipping containers pieced together like Leviathan Legos, opens on July 23.

The newest market for the borough — which joins a crowded field that already includes the Brooklyn Flea in nearby Fort Greene, as well as the Brooklyn Flea, Smorgasburg and Northside Market, new to Williamsburg this year — has an added edge by bringing food and crafts makers to the site seven days a week, year-round, rather than only on the weekend.

The 40 or so vendors setting up shop in the containers include Cheeky Sandwiches, Robicelli’s, of cupcake fame, and Sour Puss pickles on the food front, and 3rd Ward, Harriet’s Alter Ego, and Little Poco on the crafts and clothing front.

“It’s a wide variety,” said Jessica Tolliver of Urban Space Management, the group putting together the market. “We’re hoping to provide something new and interesting to people in the area.”

Beyond shopping, market goers can check out the market’s on-site farm, which will feature cooking demos, as well as live music and a beer garden. The weekend will also feature more vendors setting up shop at the temporary market, which will be operating until CityPoint is complete.

“Urban Space really focuses on going into areas that are not being used to full potential and putting something there for the community to enjoy,” said Tolliver. “This is a great opportunity for that.”

Two craft fairs for the Etsy crowd

A hip craft fair returns, and Etsy makers find a new home in this week’s Market Watch.

Renegade Craft Fair

McCarren Park’s DIY spectacular — the Renegade Craft Fair — sets up on June 11 and 12 with more than 300 indie craft vendors. There’ll be items to buy, with handmade goods in the genres of jewelry, clothing, ceramics and stationery, bath products, posters, housewares, comics, and plush objects. Shoppers can get crafty themselves thanks to workshops, including sewing tips from BurdaStyle, an accessories table manned by Brooklyn Charm, and prints from Freshly Drawn. When not shopping, munch on goodies from Hecho en Casa and Urban Rustic, or get your photo taken at the Magnolia Photo Booth and make it a fair to remember.

The {New New}

We’ll never understand the punctuation, but we love the Etsy crafters coalition The {New New}. And this summer, it’ll be setting up shop at Celebrate Brooklyn. Starting with the June 10 kick-off, you can browse the pop-up shop Better Than Jam while rocking out to the music stylings of Andrew Bird (insert “Put a bird on it” joke here), and the diverse programming that follows. Expect such vendors as Purtybird and its quirky owls, and Kim Last Designs and its dramatic skeleton key necklaces.

A big outdoor market premieres under the DUMBO Archway, a “smorgasburg” of food vendors makes its way to the Williamsburg waterfront, and a quirky store pulls out in this week’s Market Watch:

Brooklyn Craft Central Spring Market

This is not your run-of-the-mill street fair. On May 21, the Belgian blocks under the DUMBO Archway will become home to Etsy-type crafters, music and tasty food vendors as Brooklyn Craft Central throws its annual Spring Market. Have your pick of subway-inspired pillows by Uptown Artworks, environmentally friendly totes by Survive Design, jewelry by Tamaura Designs, and treats from The Chocolate Swirl. Local bands and musicians will also set up shop at the entryway for acoustic sets, and Poloppo will man a corner for kids where they can make their own arts and crafts.

Smorgasburg

This one’s for the foodies. On May 21, the operators behind the Brooklyn Flea antiques and crafts markets turn their attention to organic farmers and Brooklyn-made foodstuffs with the debut of Smorgasburg, a gastro-centric marketplace opening on the Williamsburg waterfront. There, you’ll find more than 100 food vendors, selling packaged, cooked, baked and raw goods, including cold sesame noodles from Shorty Tang & Sons, gazpacho from La Buena, and chocolate-covered bananas from Nana’s (complete list of vendors here). The Brooklyn Kitchen will sell kitchenwares, and Kickstarter, the capital-raising website, will have a booth featuring goods from local project creators. A greenmarket will also feature more than a dozen farmers and special chef demos. It’s enough to get you started on your own artisanal food endeavor.

Fred Flare flames out

You’ll have to rely on its website once again for Fred Flare’s quirky cute goods.  According to Racked, its Greenpoint location closed last week after two-and-a-half years. It appears the Meserole Avenue location was a bit too remote for fans of Rubik’s cube clocks and babushkups nesting glasses.

Spring Craft Market

More than 60 craftspeople will descend on the Brooklyn Lyceum in Park Slope on April 30 and May 1 for its annual Spring Craft Market. There’ll also be music, food and drink to also entertain, but don’t waste this opportunity to score a gift for the mother in your life, as Mother’s Day is fast approaching on May 8.

Steve Alan expands

The old Jodi Arnold space next to Steven Alan on Atlantic Avenue has a new tenant — Steven Alan. Racked reports that the designer is essentially doubling in size in Boerum Hill as it takes advantage of the vacant space next store, which became open when designer Jodi Arnold closed in December, to have his and hers store. Each space, the original at 349 Atlantic Ave., the other at 347 Atlantic Ave., won’t be accessible from the other, but in case you’re shopping for both sexes, they’re still only right next door to each other. The new space is expected to open this week.

Brooklyn gets in the swim with Malia Mills

Swimsuit season is just around the corner. And right there waving hello is Malia Mills. The swimwear company just opened in Boerum Hill on Atlantic Avenue, bringing in high-end suits for all sizes — with tops and bottoms available for almost every fit. The store also carries accessories, bags, hats, sweaters and scarves for a complete look.

“We create items that we want to pack in our dream suitcase — so women feel like rockstars whether home or away,” said Mills.

DUMBO ‘Industries’

After a sneak peak earlier this month at a sample sale, the Brooklyn Industries in DUMBO is now officially open. In keeping with the location, the store — the brand’s sixth in Brooklyn and 15th nationwide — is modeled as an art installation within a gallery, with white walls, high ceilings and even sculptures.

“We will feature art by artists within the company and we will redesign fixtures and the overall design of the space every six months,” said the company’s aptly named CEO Lexy Funk.

As well as, of course, the brand’s signature hip apparel, accessories and messenger bags.

Indie collapse

After four years, the Brooklyn Indie Market — the little local designer marketplace under a red and white-striped tent at Smith and Union streets in Carroll Gardens — has called it quits. The spot took a break during the winter earlier this year, but decided not to continue in the spring, instead evolving into an event/wedding coordination and styling company, Clementine Events. There is currently a For Rent sign on the tent, reports the blog G’Day Brooklyn. So you’ll have to look elsewhere for your eco-friendly notebooks, bib necklaces and mini cupcakes for now.

If you're heading to Artist and Fleas this weekend, make sure you head to its new location.

It's still in Williamsburg, but the market can now be found on N. Seventh Street between Wythe and Kent avenues -  not too far from its old location on N. Sixth Street.

And you can still expect a lot of artist-made, designer-created, vintage-based stuff.

Give Brooklyn

Give the gift of Brooklyn this holiday with these borough-centric items from some of the borough’s newest designers. 

AphroChic throw pillows

Earlier this fall, AphroChic, a lifestyle brand focusing on high-end product design, launches its “Brooklyn Renaissance” line, comprised of table top décor, wall coverings and other decorative items that pay tribute to our borough. But the most eye-catching items belong to the throw pillows ($105-$225) inspired by some neighborhoods and the women that inhabit them. Pop Chart Lab posters

The Gowanus-based design collective Pop Chart Lab started making its pop culture obsessed posters and T-shirts this past September, which chart varieties of beer, video game controllers and names of rappers. But its more clever conceits is the “No Sleep ’til Breuckelen” poster ($18), a black, grey and white print that gives a shoutout to 17th-century Dutch Brooklyn with a map of the original Brooklyn neighborhoods, including Bosjick, Rood Hoek and Midwout. There’s even a colonial dude with a massive boombox rocking out. Finally, the hip-hop loving historian in your life can kick it olde school.

Sure, Etsy’s good for finding unique crafts this holiday season, but nothing beats shopping in person when you have a friend who always seems to have everything. Luckily, there’s plenty of craft markets in the coming weeks, as well as pop-up shops, that will have you checking off everyone on your shopping list.

Brooklyn Artisans Trunk Show

You can find great baklava at Sam’s Bakery, and now, on Nov. 30, great gifts, too. The Brooklyn Artisans Trunk Show sets up show at the Bay Ridge bakery, featuring a select number of local artists, craftmakers and Etsy-types selling their wares. That includes Groundsel’s clever carriers, from a wristlet made from a man’s suit (left), to an iPhone case made from a vintage tie; Owllamode’s vintage poppy headpieces; and Very Sage’s cozy, crocheted ear flap hat. And who knows what else you’ll dig up at this trunk show.

The only rule about 3rd Ward’s annual craft fair on Dec. 4 is that all items must be handmade — hence the name. The result is carefully crafted, detailed pieces made with love, that you’re sure to fall in love with, too. While you peruse clothing, jewelry, accessories, housewares, and prints, enjoy live music, or even take a workshop in DIY printmaking, flocking and sewing. And maybe next year, you’ll be sitting behind a booth. Or at the very least, making your own gifts.

Your weekend shopping guide

There’s lots to keep you shoppers busy this weekend, as we’ve got news on a new children’s store, an art toy show and holiday markets. Yes, the season is fast upon us.

Livie and Boo

Prospect Heights parents have a new place to shop, thanks to Livie and Boo. A Beacon’s Closet for kids, the story sells nearly new children’s clothing and shoes for kids up to age 6. But a Salvation Army this is not. “It was really important for me that the store feels like a high-end boutique,” said owner Chantal Scott. There’s even an arts area and toys to keep little ones occupied while grown-ups shop. For those looking to unload, the store buys clothes in excellent used condition and offers 25 percent cash or 40 percent store credit for what it might retail for.

MF Toys Show 

This is for the person who has everything — and also has a somewhat twisted sense of humor. Starting Nov. 20, MF Gallery in Gowanus hosts its annual toy show, featuring unique, handmade toy art items, some for as little as $10, that are sometimes creepy, sometimes cute. Take Moses Jaen’s growling zombie heads, Jacqui Gallants’ deranged Mary and her little rabid lambs (above), or the gallery’s own Frankenstein’s monster-esque pieces. The toys and dolls are meant for display purposes mostly — hence the “toy art” term — and make for neat additions to an art collection, or, for the smaller, hanging pieces, even ornaments for the tree. “Everything we do, we try to open it up to a broader audience, that’s not your typical art collecting people,” said gallery co-owner Martina Russo.

Holiday Gift Market

Get a jump start on your holiday shopping at the Brooklyn Heights Synagogue this Sunday, as it hosts a Holiday Gift Market. Usually a smaller affair with a limited selection of crafts and books, this year’s market boasts items from local and international merchants, including jewelry from Juicy Beads and Lisa Grant, Judaica crafts from Studio Gruss, ceramics from Clayworks on Columbia, and paperie from Papel. There will also be artisanal food products for sale, on-site eats from Cobblestone Foods, and a wine tasting with Brooklyn Wine Exchange.

Brooklyn Flea on the move

And just a quick note — the Brooklyn Flea moves completely indoors next weekend, with Saturday’s location moving on Nov. 27 from the outdoor track at Bishop Loughlin HS in Fort Greene to Skylight One Hanson inside the Williamsburgh Savings Bank building, which is also Sunday’s location for the popular market.

Where to shop this weekend

Brooklyn Designers Showcase

You won’t find the Brooklyn Designers Showcase in a hip venue or gallery; rather, local talent shows off its wares at a Brooklyn Heights church. On Nov. 6 at St. Ann’s Church, find one-of-a-kind items such as handmade recycled shopping totes by Old Bag Ladies, as well as stained-glass art and homemade lotions and soaps. Module R

There’s a new pop-up in town. In the wake of ModulA.R.T., a temporary design store in DUMBO this past spring, comes Module R, a sister brand featuring modular products and furnishings for the home and office, including wine racks, shelving units, room dividers and housewares that are all customizable. Yankee Fair  

This one’s fun for the whole family. The Yankee Fair returns to Plymouth Church on Nov. 6, with handcrafted items, antiques, collectibles, and vintage and designer clothing to peruse, as well as children’s rides and games, from pony rides to face painting to a magician providing entertainment. Try your hand at the 50-50 raffle, and you might wind up with even more dough to spend.

Halloween shopping, and more

Market Watch is back this week with some news on a brand new store and a fun, Halloween-themed shopping excursion.

TJMaxx

On the heels of one of the priciest designer stores opening in Brooklyn comes the complete opposite. Fashionable shoppers maxed out by Barneys can enjoy TJMaxx, as the discount designer chain opened its first Brooklyn location this past weekend in Midwood. It’s right off the Kings Highway stop, so your half-priced designer duds and home décor are only a subway ride away. As far as someone helping you with all those shopping bags, that’s a different story.

Nightwood Design

Pop-up stores by their nature are temporary, which makes the news that Nightwood Design, a furniture and design studio found in the Be@Schermerhorn residential building, is extending its run from the end of October through Dec. 14 even sweeter. The store specializes in reconstructed furniture and textiles, made with a modern yet rustic aesthetic. The chairs, art, benches and beds are meticulously arranged in the immense ground-floor space, like a high design Ikea but with one-of-a-kind pieces. So even if you aren’t on the hunt for a new desk or cabinet, you can still pretend.

Kings County General Store

Who says you can’t go shopping in your Halloween costume? In fact, the Kings County General Store downright demands it. This Oct. 31, stay as Lady Gaga or Justin Bieber as you peruse this monthly market, home to such vendors as Mifflin Jewelry and its (of course) vintage accessories, Chloe Chapman’s lovely bird-inspired greeting cards, and Omnia Wears’s worn (in a good way) leather satchels and driving gloves, which make you wish you actually drove. This is a club after all, so enjoy drink specials and spooky music by Mikey Palms. The first 50 people in costume also get a free tote bag, so there’s some incentive to get there early.

'Punk' style

A “punk” annual tradition returns to DUMBO, while two new stores bring fashionable styles to Red Hook and Clinton Hill. Here’s what’s on our market watch this week.

Steampunk Day

Celebrate steampunk culture, fashion and craftsmanship at DUMBO Loft on Oct. 24. What is steampunk, you say? Think “Victorian-era science fiction,” says writer August Wahnsinger (pictured), a student in the matter.

“Anything that can be envisioned as a part of a scientifically advanced ‘steam’ era can be properly described as steampunk, going back to the works of Mary Shelley, Jules Verne and H.G. Wells.”

Helping get you there are wearable wunderkammer from Ami Nyitray Designs, unique vestments by Kristin Costa, and clothes with an old world charm from Berit New York.

If youíre looking for a new bodice or clockwork-inspired accoutrements, this one’s for you.

Everbrite Mercantile Company

The former Atlantis antique shop in Red Hook is getting a new life. Vacant for over a year, the Van Brunt Street space welcomes Everbrite Mercantile Company, a design shop specializing in quirky yet stylish home décor and clothing that opened this week.

Owner Mollie Dash’s handcrafted vintage jewelry was previously only available on Greenpoint boutique Old Hollywood’s website. Now, her gems are joined by items that would be at home at the Brooklyn Flea, like bird’s foot bookends, a rope money clip, and a literal smoking gun — a cigarette holder in the shape of a, well, gun.

Talk about a conversation starter.
