Pumps & Pleats: Shop Kings Highway
Story and photo by Michèle De Meglio
Shoppers in southern Brooklyn know that they can find the trendiest boutiques on Kings Highway.
From Ocean Avenue to McDonald Avenue, the strip is chock full of cozy shops. Some are low-end (think 99-cent stores) and others are super high-end (like Jimmy Choo stilettos at Chuckies).
If you’re looking for something in between, there’s plenty of stores to peruse for affordable yet quality goods.
Start your journey at Pasarela, 1208 Kings Highway.
The ladies’ boutique carries trendy clothing and accessories that won’t bust your budget. In fact, the shop always has items on sale.
Pumps & Pleats has found gold lamé high-tops at 30 percent off, faux UGG boots for $25 and $10 blue jeans. Love those prices!
Keep on walking until you reach Karbon, 1310 Kings Highway.
The men’s shop shares Pasarela’s owner and its emphasis on of-the-moment fashions. Stop in here for funky Kidrobot graphic tees and jeans covered in studs.
Afterwards, head across the street to Enzyme Shoelab, 1309 Kings Highway.
The shop boasts the latest and hottest fads in ladies’ footwear. Choose from popular brands like Jeffrey Campbell and Big Buddha. But be warned, some of the styles can be a bit pricey.
If you need some sporty kicks, check out Central Sports, 1412 Kings Highway.
The two-story store boasts skateboarding gear, North Face jackets — and more than 900 pairs of sneakers! You’ll be sure to find your favorite style here.
A tour of Kings Highway wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Fox’s, 911-927 Kings Highway.
Similar to Century 21 and Loehmann’s, Fox’s offers designer goods at a deep discount.
It’s best to have a game plan when shopping at Fox’s. First, skip insanely busy weekends and hit the store Monday to Friday. That’s also when new shipments arrive.
Second, if you see something special, grab it — before someone else does.
Third, dig, dig, dig! The store is so jam-packed with apparel, handbags, shoes and accessories, that you’ll need plenty of patience to search through all the racks — and not freak out when ladies shove their purses into your side.
But remember, the pain is worth finding a gorgeous DKNY top marked down to $29. Score!
