Don’t play hooky on this coming-of-age classic.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” — John Hughes’s much-loved comedy about a popular high school senior who gets away with cutting school — screens at McCarren Park tonight as part of the SummerScreen outdoor film series.

The series’ theme is cool movies — and it wouldn’t be complete without this 1986 film.

The story follows a day in the life of the titular character (a baby-faced Matthew Broderick), who feigns illness to run around Chicago with his girlfriend and neurotic best friend Cameron (Alan Ruck).

It’s the perfect day — the trio takes in a game at Wrigley Field, visits the Sears Tower, browses the Art Institute of Chicago, and even assumes a central role at the Von Steuben Day Parade, where Bueller lip-syncs “Danke Schoen” and “Twist and Shout.”

The movie is great, but if it’s not enough to get you to play hooky for a few hours, there will be food from Pizza Moto, V-Spot, Bark Hog Dogs and Coolhaus, as well as brews from SixPoint.

Bueller himself couldn’t have planned a more perfect outing.

Two craft fairs for the Etsy crowd

A hip craft fair returns, and Etsy makers find a new home in this week’s Market Watch.

Renegade Craft Fair

McCarren Park’s DIY spectacular — the Renegade Craft Fair — sets up on June 11 and 12 with more than 300 indie craft vendors. There’ll be items to buy, with handmade goods in the genres of jewelry, clothing, ceramics and stationery, bath products, posters, housewares, comics, and plush objects. Shoppers can get crafty themselves thanks to workshops, including sewing tips from BurdaStyle, an accessories table manned by Brooklyn Charm, and prints from Freshly Drawn. When not shopping, munch on goodies from Hecho en Casa and Urban Rustic, or get your photo taken at the Magnolia Photo Booth and make it a fair to remember.

The {New New}

We’ll never understand the punctuation, but we love the Etsy crafters coalition The {New New}. And this summer, it’ll be setting up shop at Celebrate Brooklyn. Starting with the June 10 kick-off, you can browse the pop-up shop Better Than Jam while rocking out to the music stylings of Andrew Bird (insert “Put a bird on it” joke here), and the diverse programming that follows. Expect such vendors as Purtybird and its quirky owls, and Kim Last Designs and its dramatic skeleton key necklaces.

Crafts go renegade

The renegades are coming — and they’re bringing crafts!

The Renegade Craft Fair will rock McCarren Park on June 5 and 6, when 300 artists display and sell their handmade unique designs.

“There’s something for everybody,” said Sue Daly, the event’s organizer. “You’ll find a lot of housewares, clothing and ceramics. A lot of the stuff is one of a kind.”

That’s a great way to describe Greenpoint resident Daina Platais’ ceramics collection. Her “bread and butter” piece is a set of salt and pepper shakers shaped like an avocado.

“Everybody loves them,” Platais said. “I’ve been making them for three years now and they’re really a hit.”

Speaking of best-selling designs, Tamara Stoddard’s Brooklyn Craft line is giving a fresh look to classic sock monkey dolls.

“They’re a new take on the old sock monkeys with the red mouth,” she said. “I’ve made an albino sock monkey, a skeleton with felt bones, and a pirate with a peg leg and eyepatch.”

Stoddard will share her booth at the Fair with Jill Davis, whose J Davis Studio produces delicate jewelry featuring tiny homes and trees.

“I love miniatures,” said Davis, a Clinton Hill resident. “I grew up in a house in Ohio and then I moved to New York where no one has a house, so this is my way of bringing a home with me.”

Concert venue for North Brooklyn

The New York City music community is abuzz with news that, after the popular McCarren Park concert series came to an end last August, North Brooklyn will be home to even more concerts, brought to you by the Pool Party founders Jelly NYC, this summer at the East River State Park.

The park, which stretches from North 7th to North 9th Streets on the Williamsburg waterfront, became the first public space in Williamsburg to enable access to the water’s edge when it opened last Memorial Day.

According to The Trip Wire, the shows kick off July 12 and run through August 30 for eight total. Last year alone brought The Liars, M.I.A. and Sonic Youth to Brooklyn for the McCarren Park Pool series. Who's on your wish list to rock out on the waterfront?
