Indie gods in Williamsburg

By Meredith Deliso

Pavement fans, your time is now.

The California-born band, which ushered in the age of alternative rock music in the early 1990s, comes to Brooklyn on Sept. 19 with a show on the Williamsburg waterfront.

It’s been 10 years since the band last picked up their instruments together, but they’re back with a bang. In what started out as one show at Central Park quickly ballooned into four, with the Brooklyn show added for good measure. Yeah, people really like this band.

Mainstream commercial success may have eluded Pavement for much of its prime, but the five lo-fi rockers didn’t lack for critical acclaim, with more than a few “Best Band of the ’90s” thrown their way thanks to stellar albums like “Slanted & Enchanted” and “Terror Twilight.”

Loved for its sloppy, quirky lyrics and garage rock sound, Pavement’s guitar pop and laissez-faire attitude have undoubtedly inspired many bands that have followed since — these guys practically invented indie rock.

Just in time for the reunion shows, the band released “Quarantine the Past,” a “best of” compilation comprised of tracks from the band’s five albums. For those who weren’t there, it’s not too late to join the party.

Pavement at the Williamsburg Waterfront (N. Eighth Street and Kent Avenue in Williamsburg, no phone), Sept. 19 at 5:30 pm. Tickets $38.50 through Ticketmaster.
