Greenpoint Food Market closing gets bites
That's the way the cookie crumbles.
The city's food blogs are reacting after Joann Kim, organizer of the Greenpoint Food Market, decided to forgo next weekend's event than face a city crackdown.
Eater calls the Department of Health a "killjoy." Village Voice lamented the assault on the DIY can-do spirit of the vendors. Gothamist noted how this comes following some love from the New York Times, in a similar vein to the BKLYN Yard.
In lieu of the June 26 market, Kim will hold a summit on the neighborhood's grassroots food industry, complete with a Health Department rep and local officials. She looks to reopen in the future once vendors have gotten proper certificates.
What do you think of the market, and local DIY ones like it? Should they be held to the same standards as restaurants, or left alone?
