One hot party

By Adam Warner

The Big Easy is coming to Brooklyn.

On Dec. 3 and 4, the Brooklyn Academy of Music hosts “Red Hot + New Orleans,” two nights of hot jazz from musicians who call the Crescent City home.

“It’s going to be a true all-star revue of the music of New Orleans,” said Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, the program’s musical director and, as the name implies, a fierce trombonist. “It’ll sound and feel like they dropped the city of New Orleans going full tilt on New York.”

Andrews has brought together the likes of Kermit Ruffins, members of the Rebirth Brass Band, Dr. John, and Marc Broussard for the two-day festival, which also serves as an AIDS benefit. Past themed events at BAM have included 2008’s “Red Hot + Rio 2,” which celebrated the culture of Brazil, and, in 2006, “Red Hot + Riot Live,” which paid tribute to Nigerian musician Fela Kuti. Now, the music — and resilience — of New Orleans has a time to shine.

“Coming from New Orleans, music is all around you, it’s 24 hours a day,” said Andrews. “In my music, I try to get that flavor of the city in there to keep it going.”

“Red Hot + New Orleans” at the Brooklyn Academy of Music [30 Lafayette Ave. at Ashland Place in Fort Greene, (718) 636-4100], Dec. 3 and 4 at 8 pm. Tickets $25-$65. For info, visit www.bam.org.
